Entertainment Scoop

HIGHLY Recommended: Good Deeds A Great Movie!

So the talented Mr. Perry doesn’t keep his fans waiting for long as he is known to push out at least two movies a year, a host of television shows and his beloved stage plays which have brought him to his current reverence. So, what is it about this particular project that makes me want to give Tyler Perry an achievement award? Possibly the fact that the story line for Good Deeds is absolutely compelling. Tyler has a way of introducing each of his characters in relatively dramatic scenes while allowing you to decide if you will root for the character throughout the movie or despise them the entire time. Side Note: At no point could I relate Tyler’s character (Wesley Deeds) to the overly eccentric Madea in some of his other films.

Although each character in the movie delivered outstanding performances including Brian White, Gabrielle Union, Thandie Newton, Jamie Kennedy, Rebecca Romijn and Mr. Tyler himself, I almost jumped for joy when the incomparable Phylicia Rashad graced the screen. She is undoubtedly one of my favorite actresses of all time and to see her in such an awesome role made me think back to her days as the stern, yet loving Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show.

My favorite scene from the movie is when Lindsey (Thandie Newton) meets Wesley’s (Tyler Perry) mother played by Ms. Rashad during a celebration at the family’s corporate offices. Wesley and his family are well-to-do business owners and Lindsey just so happens to work for them as a janitor. Well, as you might imagine, Wesley is too good for Lindsey – according to his overbearing mother, and tension starts to fly quickly. What doesn’t help the situation much is Wesley’s jealous and irresponsible brother played by Brian White. The scene gets real ugly and you become unsure if you want to cry or cheer by the time things settle down. Because Tyler was able to jerk my emotions like a five speed car on a steep hill, I must say that this is one movie that I would have to give 4 HIGH Fives out of 5. I would have given it 5 HIGH Fives but I am still not sure if I liked the ending as much as I did the rest of the film. Either way, I highly recommend you see this one before it leaves theaters!

HIGH Note: A Melodic Moment With AnthonyQ

He was the youngest chosen to be in Diddy’s “Making The Band 4” for three seasons of the popular MTV show. Day26 became “the band” and emerged as an all male group garnering much success atop the Billboard charts. Following his departure from the hit R&B group, Que has made impressive strides while moving on to a blossoming solo career and boasting a new TV show. The crooner is all grown up and goes by his new alias, AnthonyQ…quite confidently. We recently caught up with Mr. Q in Atlanta at the release party for his new single, “Melody”. He enlightened us on what lies ahead in his future and shows us that this is only the beginning for one of entertainment’s rising front men.

AOM: We are here with AnthonyQ celebrating the release of his new single, “Melody”. How are you doing Q?

Que: I’m chilling. I’m having a lot of fun.

AOM: I’m loving the outfit. Who are you wearing?

Que: This is Ruckage. They have been styling me lately. They styled me for my last photo shoot. They had a really dope jacket so I was like ‘Yo I gotta rock this up again’.

AOM: I really enjoyed your last mix tape, Guitar Her. My favorite song on the project was the song “Hair”.

Que: “Hair”? (Laughs)

AOM: So what was your favorite song on Guitar Her?

Que: My favorite songs on Guitar Her are “Medicine” and “Free Falling”.

AOM: I loved the video for “Medicine”. It was very nice.

Que:  Thank you.

AOM: Let’s talk about “Melody”. Where are you taking us with this single?

Que:  Basically the concept of “Melody” has like a double meaning. The melody represents the woman so you think I’m talking about my woman. Then when it gets to the hook and I’m like “Well I’m talking about my Melody” so it has like a double meaning. Of course the melody represents the woman but it’s ‘my melody’.

AOM: Right. It’s like love can be your melody in the song as well.

Que: Exactly.

AOM: What’s next for Anthony Q? What can we look forward to?

Que: Right now I’m pushing my two singles, “See Me” and “Melody” available on iTunes. Besides that, I’m working on my album. I also have a new TV show that I’m working on. It’s a dance show called “Rhythm Nation” which will take place in L.A. But I’m mostly focused on getting the music out right now.

AOM: Well, we definitely enjoy your music at Aspire Online Media and The HIGH UP and are looking forward to seeing you hit the stage tonight.

Que: Yes. I’m about to perform “Melody”. Thank you.

Following the interview, “Que” serenaded the ladies with his melodic and captivating voice while performing his hit singles, “Medicine” and “Melody” at his release party on Sunday, January 22nd at Josephine Lounge in Atlanta. With his humble spirit and incomparable talent, there is no denying that AnthonyQ will continue to bless our ears for years to come. Follow him @Que_thafuture!

Weekly HIGH: Your Dose Of Entertainment News!

The first week in the new year was pretty interesting to say the least. They say that the way you start your year is the way you end it. From Twitter rants and lawsuits to restraining orders, we hope from the look of this week’s highlights, this isn’t true.

To start off on a good note, we are all aware of the great news that the Queen of Soul provided to us in the New Year. Aretha Franklin has confirmed that she is marrying longtime confidant Willie Wilkinson. Along with the excitement of an engagement comes the excitement of planning a wedding. Aretha Franklin revealed a few items on her wish list last week. She revealed to the Associated Press that she would like to have all the creative control over the planning of her wedding.

“ You know I am very hands-on. There is no way in the world anyone else could do my wedding other than myself, along with whomever I select to do various things.”

Aretha hopes to have her wedding gown made by either Donna Karan or Vera Wang who are classic choices.

“I’d love to see what they would do custom for me without me saying anything. They’re known for kick butt dresses,” she said. She continued to talk about her entertainment, adding Smokey Robinson, Karen Clark and Stevie Wonder to her wish list.

Well we are sure that Aretha Franklin’s wedding will be a moment to remember. We are looking forward to seeing the pictures from this beautiful moment. Congratulations again to Aretha Franklin and Willie Wilkinson!

Well there is a price for fame and for Wiz Khalifa it’s 2.3 million. Khalifa started the year off being served with a lawsuit. Pittsburgh rapper, Wax Warren, is suing Wiz Khalifa for $2.3 million over allegations that he stole his hit “Black and Yellow.”

In the world of copyrighting, its first come first served. According to Warren, he was first to copyright his song, “Pink N Yellow” in 2008. Khalifa copyrighted “Black and Yellow” in 2011.

According to AllHipHop.com, the copyright infringement lawsuit was filed in federal court in Philadelphia and seeks at least $2.3 million in damages. It names Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomas, two other songwriters and several record companies and music publishers, including PGH Sound, EMI Music Publishing, Rostrum Records, Warner Music Group and Atlantic Recording Corporation.

Taking a listen to both songs, there’s not much similarity that stands out. The refrain for “Pink N Yellow” and “Black and Yellow” is similar in rhythm patterns, but the tracks and melodies are pretty distinguished. Take a listen to both songs and you be the judge. Tweet Talk: Is this a suit that will hold up in court? Hit me up @AmadiJae.

Kanye didn’t take the Twitter lesson that we shared last week to heart. Being pretty expressive about fame and his new company, Kanye West took to the popular social media outlet to express himself. Most of his rant was his frustration with the fashion industry and the excitement about his new venture. At times, though, the rant did become very informative.

One thing that he revealed that is very exciting to hear is that he has started a new business, DONDA. He provided only a few details on Twitter this past week.

“I have started a new company and I’m so excited about the name… it’s got the best name ever of all companies of all time!!!! The name of the company is DONDA. DONDA is a design company, which will galvanize amazing thinkers and put them in a creative space to bounce their dreams and ideas. DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford.” He continues by stating, “I want to put creatives in a room together with like minds that are all waaaayy doper than me. This will all take time but I wanted everyone to know what I really care about… I care about people. I care about my fans.”

He provided contact information if you are interested in working for his new endeavor.

“If anyone would like to reach out email us at contactDONDA@gmail.com.”

Kanye provided his thoughts on education before finally ending his passionate rant.

“Help education. School systems were designed to turn people into factory workers. Math classes should teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, accounting and money management aaaaaaannd cut!!! UNLESS YOU’RE A MATH MAJOR!!! Kids you should be able to take majors starting in grammar school like how it is at performing art schools”.

Whether you agree with Kanye’s views or not, it is great to see someone with such passion.

Selena Gomez started off the year with a victory. A victory that may have saved her life on January 6th, the singer-actress was granted peace of mind when a civil judge ruled on a three-year restraining order against the man who had threatened to kill her and had attempted to meet her in the past.

By receiving this restraining order, 46-year old Thomas Brodnicki is to stay away from Selena Gomez and not make any attempt to contact her.

This order also protects the singer-actress’s family. The 19-year old star did not appear in court during the hearing on Wednesday, January 5th. She instead wrote in a declaration filed in October that she was in extreme fear after learning that the 46 year-old defendant had threatened to kill her while on a psychiatric hold.

We are happy to know that the law has worked in Selena’s favor. We wish Ms. Gomez and her family much success and “peace of mind” in the future.

HIGH Buzz: Common Feuds With Drake

What would Hip-Hop be without an entertaining feud every now and again? Drake can now say that he has contributed to the “classic” form of entertainment. Surprisingly, a hip-hop legend in his own right, Common has decided to take a jab at the Canadian superstar on the remix of “Stay Schemin” which is a track off of Rick Ross’s newest mixtape. Common began the feud with Drake when using antagonistic lyrics on “Sweet”, a track off of his newest release, “The Dreamer/The Believer”. Common goes head on with a vivid description of the rapper in the remix calling Drake an Amateur Guy and Canada dry. He ended his verse by stating, “Make no mistake, I’m talking to Drake. This is the remix.” There’s no clarity on why Common is attacking the Young Money superstar, but one thing’s for certain, it’s bound to get interesting.  Listen to the “Stay Schemin” Remix by Rick Ross ft. Drake, Common, and French Montana below.

Tweet Talk: Do you think Common is being too harsh or do you think this whooping is for Drake’s own good?

HIGH Calling: Justin Bieber Speaks On Religion

Justin Bieber is truly a believer and isn’t ashamed to tell the world about it. Justin opened up to V Magazine about his religious beliefs.

“A lot of people who are religious, I think they get lost. They go to church just to go to church. I’m not trying to disrespect them, but for me, I focus more on praying and talking to Him,” the Biebs explained in the issue, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. “I don’t have to go to church.”

Breaking the rules of the norm, the pop superstar thanked God when accepting the Moon Man at the 2011 VMAs for best male video, “U Smile”, stating, “ I just want to say thank you so much, not only to God but to Jesus, because I wouldn’t be here without Him. He’s really blessed me. He’s put me in this position. So I want to say thank you so much.”

Justin Bieber is the first star in a long time that has been so expressive and open about his religion. The issue hit newsstands today. In the issue, Bieber also discusses his rise to fame stating, “ Now that I’m on top, everyone wants to bring me down. Everyone’s trying to tug at me and take my spot. Like Floyd Mayweather, he’s the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion. Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, ‘He’s going to lose this time.’”

Although many are tugging at the Biebs, we are sure that he won’t succumb to them any time soon.  If he continues to keep his beliefs as his main focus, he will continue to soar to heights that he never thought he could reach. He’s currently recording his next album, “Believe”, set for release later this year.

BREAKING NEWS: Beyonce & Jay-Z Welcome Ivy Blue!

Crushable.com

We recently reported our top moments of 2011. At the top of our list was the priceless moment when Beyonce revealed her baby bump to the world on MTV’s Video Music Awards. I believe we have now witnessed one of the top moments of 2012! Ever since the big “reveal”, we have been waiting for the moment that the super couple’s (husband Jay-Z) first child arrived and……without further ado, SHE is finally here!

According to the NY Daily News, an extremely pregnant Beyonce checked into the Upper East Side Hospital Friday night under the alias “Ingrid Jackson”, a hospital staffer told the Daily News.

Beyonce and Jay-Z rented out the hospital’s entire fourth floor for 1.3 million to assure that no images of their bundle of joy were captured. To insure discretion, hospital workers placed tape over security cameras and forced employees to turn in cell phones when they arrived for their shifts, the source said.

Several security guards were spotted patrolling the outer premises Saturday night. A Lenox Hill staffer confirmed that a patient by the name of “Ingrid Jackson” was in a “labor room”.

The super couple has reportedly given birth to a baby girl and has named their little princess Ivy Blue Carter. Congratulations to the Carters on their new addition!

WEEKLY HIGH: A Dose Of Entertainment

It seems like this past week in entertainment was the season to be jolly, get engaged, release new music, and announce the album queen of the year!

Two days after Christmas, B.O.B served us up with a late Christmas gift with his second single, “Play the Guitar” featuring Andre 3000. Before listening to the song, you already have an ounce of excitement knowing that your ears will be graced with the voice of hip-hop veteran Andre 3000. As soon as the beat starts your involuntary head bob begins. There’s no miss with this song. B.O.B has taken his craft to the next level. This song shows us that he has truly found his sound, perfectly mixing the Hip-Hop ingredients with rock spices. Andre 3000 puts the icing on the cake and takes it home for their listeners. Take a listen below and let us know what you think.

Tis’ the perfect season to pop the question! John Legend was elated to hear the answer, “Yes” from model Chrissy Teigen.  “The lovely couple got engaged over the holidays while vacationing in the Maldives,” the R&B singer’s rep, Cindi Berger confirmed to People Magazine. It’s always refreshing to see the love of two people grow into a beautiful commitment such as marriage. I am looking forward to seeing the wedding photos in the near future. The High Up and Aspire Online Media family congratulate the couple on their engagement.

It is no surprise who the crowned queen of 2011 music is. Adele conquered music in 2011 with her album “21”. In every artist’s career, they dread the possibility of a sophomore slump. Released in February, Adele’s album defied those odds and soared into iconic horizons. In barely 11 months, she has sold more than any artist in the world, currently stepping into 13 million albums sold worldwide. Her songs express the stories of a heart that had been broken accompanied by a rare and authentic voice and delivery. She is truly one of a kind. Although she has experienced trials with her voice throughout the year, forcing her at times to cancel shows and tours, she has still managed to take the number one slot effortlessly. With no hesitation, I can say that she will be here for years to come. We can only hope that she has a successful recovery that will keep her where she belongs – on stage and in our hearts.

With the New Year upon us full throttle, we are curious to see how HIGH entertainment and music will take us in the coming months. Keep it plugged for more entertainment and music news right here at The HIGH UP.

Highs & Lows: Icons Lost In 2011

Going into a New Year can be a time to set new goals, throw away the old to let in the new, or simply a moment of reflection. We at The High Up and Aspire Online Media would like to take some time to reflect on some of the iconic figures that we lost in 2011.

The world of Music and Entertainment lost a host of talents this past year. Our hearts were broken when we learned of the passing of the musical talents, Amy Winehouse, Heavy D, and Vesta Williams.  In 2011 Hollywood also said goodbye to one of its most beloved icons, Elizabeth Taylor. And the technical world said farewell to a respected pioneer, Steve Jobs. Each of these beautiful souls gave their talents and gifts to the world selflessly and through the timeless moments captured on screen, CD and technical gadgets found in many homes, colleges and offices. They will surely live on forever. To all our readers who lost loved ones and friends in 2011, we would like to send our deepest regret and will continue to keep you in our prayers. Whether prominent icons or people who were closest to us, they will forever stay in our memories and hearts.

Flashback High: 2011 In Review

From the numerous baby announcements to the birth of iconic music, we can all agree that there hasn’t been a dull moment in the world of entertainment in 2011. Before we leap into the exciting possibilities of the New Year, it is best that we reflect on the priceless memories we’ve left in the previous year. Below are my top most memorable moments of 2011:

 1.    The Baby Bump Heard Around The World

There are a few moments in Pop Culture history where you can remember the exact thing you were doing. The second Beyonce revealed her baby bump on the MTV awards during her “Love on Top” performance, I knew that this would qualify as one of those moments. I remember sitting in front of my laptop trying to pick up the online live feed to capture the awards since I was having cable trouble at the time. Thankfully, it decided to work at that very moment. Twitter was flooded with comments and on the verge of crashing down the popular social platform. This was the baby bump heard around the world. I believe in 2012, we will be fighting for a chance to see the arrival of the precious new born of the power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z. In 2011 we also witnessed baby announcements from Jessica Simpson and Hilary Duff who are both expecting their babies to arrive any day now.

2. The Unveiling of “Dem Babies”

This year was the year of the baby. After keeping us on our toes for six months, Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey revealed their twins, Morracon and Monroe in class with Barber Walters on “20/20”. Watch this momentous occasion below. Other couples to bring children into the world in 2011 were Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz and Pink and husband Carey Hart to name a few.

3. Occupy The World

We witnessed a movement in 2011 that demanded attention. The “Occupy” movement showed the frustrations of the working class around the United States and the world. Troubled with the knowledge that the middle class and poor were suffering so that the rich could maintain their wealth pushed many to take action. I had the pleasure of witnessing this movement first hand in Occupy Atlanta. As the knowledge of this movement grew, celebrities showed up to the various sites across the country to show support. Below are a couple of photos captured of Occupy Wall Street supporters.

4. Music Takes A Turn For The Better

There is no denying that music foreshadowed a shift during the year of 2011. It looks like we are on the road to pure emotion, in depth lyrics and storytelling, and creative instrumentation. We were given a hint when the amazing jazz vocalist and bassist, Esperanza Spalding won Best New Artist during this year’s Grammy ceremonies. Considered an independent artist, this was the least expected choice but the most deserving. Not as much of a shocker but equally deserved, Adele landed the highest selling album in the U.S of the year with her sophomore release, “21”. A masterpiece to say the least with vulnerable vocals and emotion throughout the album and instrumentation that vibrated through the soul. If this is any hint of what may seep into the New Year, the sound waves will truly be music to my ears.

Looking back on all the moments that we’ve witnessed in 2011, there are too many to list on one page. I am thankful that we were able to witness these moments to be able to one-day say, “ I remember when…” As the clock struck twelve and 2011 became a thing of the past, we are now able to take what we’ve learned and experienced with us so that the best days of our past can be the lowest we see in the future. Happy New Year to you and yours from the Aspire Online Media family!

WHAT’S NEW: Golden Girl Betty White Raps For Golden Cause

Who says that when you reach your “Golden Years”, you have to stop enjoying life? Betty White says there’s no stopping her. As spokeswoman for the Lifeline Program, Betty teamed up with UK artist, Luciana to remix her No. 1 dance club song “Hot”. Alongside the Lifeline Program, Betty White wants you to know that even in retirement you can still be hot. .  The remix released digitally on iTunes on Sept. 22nd.  Mirroring the reverse-mortgage concept, the Lifeline Program provides another financial option for retiring seniors: allowing them to sell an existing life insurance policy as an asset while they’re still living.

Stephen Terell, Lifeline Senior VP of Sales, Marketing and Public Relations released a statement on the song and video”

“We started thinking about how we could use social media to create a viral video campaign to reach seniors and talk about our financial retirement options. We wanted to create awareness for an industry that a lot of people don’t know exists. Then everything snowballed when Luciana’s song was brought to us.”

Although, as young professionals, we may not be looking to retire any time soon, it is refreshing to know that we can still be “Hot” in that phase of our lives. Watch the Golden Girl and Luciana “stay hot” in their latest video below for the Lifeline Program campaign and let us know what you think!

WHAT’S NEW: Michael Jackson’s Children Help Us Remember The “King Of Pop”

On October 8th,  alongside 3 generations of Jackson’s family, countless stars appeared in Wales to celebrate the life of the late King of Pop.  With appearances from Michael Jackson’s children Prince, Blanket, and Paris Jackson the tribute concert was an event to remember. On a stage designed in the shape of a glove,  Ne-Yo opened the show  and was followed by memorable performances by Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, and Leona Lewis among many others. Highlights included Christina Aguilera singing Michael Jackson’s favorite song, “Smile” and the anticipated performance by “The Jacksons”.  Latoya Jackson also took the stage for a rare performance to celebrate her brother’s life. We are always intrigued to see the heirs to the throne, Jackson’s children appear in public. When alive, Michael Jackson went through extreme measures to keep his children out of the spotlight and now his children who were kept from the public’s eye, are becoming more frequent in appearances when honoring their father. However, on this evening, Michael Jackson’s children felt at home on stage thanking everyone for gathering together to celebrate their father’s legacy.

While the notable appearances of A list stars left many speechless, the absence of others left them with many questions. Despite all of the excitement over the tribute, a few of Michael’s siblings were not as enthused. Brothers Jermaine and Randy as well as sister Janet Jackson did not attend the festivities due to their disapproval of having a tribute celebration while the trial in their brother’s death was in progress. Whether it was bad timing or not, we always long for another chance to relive the genius of Michael Jackson. I only wonder if having too many tributes will take away from their significance if done too frequently. That has yet to be seen as of yet, though.. I believe that the fascination and allure surrounding the King of Pop won’t cease anytime soon. Check out highlights from the Michael Jackson tribute concert below and let us at The High Up know your thoughts.

WHAT’S NEW: George Clooney Actor Of The Year

This 50-year-old A-List actor shows no signs of slowing down in his career. The Hollywood Film Awards is looking to distinguish George Clooney with the Actor of the Year Honor at this year’s awards ceremony on October 24th. With his outstanding performance in movies such as “The Descendants” and “The Ides of March”, it is hard not to provide the actor with this honor. George Clooney captured our emotions in “The Descendants” while portraying an emotionally distant husband and father who is forced by tragic circumstances to become a family man. The film presented by Alexander Payne was debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in September leaving the public and Hollywood in awe.

Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Award event stated, “George Clooney delivered a flawless and passionate performance in Alexander Payne’s human drama The Descendants. Clooney continues to shine as one of Hollywood’s most gifted actors. We’re delighted to honor him at this year’s Hollywood Film Awards.”

Previous recipients of the distinguished awards have included Jackie Chan, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Forest Whitaker, Robert De Niro, and many others. Crowe and Whitaker went on to win Oscars after receiving the award from the Hollywood Film Awards. We will stay tuned to see if George Clooney will follow in that tradition.

BREAKING NEWS: DMX’s Bark Returns With The 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards

I was watching the BET Hip-Hop Awards, hosted by Mike Epps, as I’m sure many of our readers were doing as well, when I was shocked to see DMX hitting the stage with Swizz Beatz. With his frequent visits to prison and numerous hardships, this was the last person that I expected to see grace my television screen. Coming out with energy reminiscent of performances in his prime, DMX performed a few of his classic songs. The crowd stood up in amazement at the sight of one of Hip-Hop’s most beloved and talented artists redeemed in front of their eyes. This has been a long time coming and I am relieved and grateful to have witnessed it. Seeing DMX doing what he does best felt like a battle that had been won and a hurdle that had been overcome. We can only hope to see more moments such as this from DMX in the near future.

FIRST LOOK: Johnny Depp On The Set Of New Movie “Dark Shadows”

Many are questioning the extreme make over that Johnny Depp took on for his role in the upcoming movie “Dark Shadows” with director Tim Burton. Known for his willingness to take the extra mile for a role, we are not surprised that Johnny would take an extreme step to bring his character to life. In “Dark Shadows” Johnny Depp joins the rank of actors to play a vampire. Although this would explain the choice of make up, he still has acquired an interesting comparison to the “King of Pop” by many critics. I am not sure that I would be able to piggy back on that comparison but do agree that his appearance is a bit on the exaggerated side. However, we do have to remember that this is not the first time that we’ve seen Johnny Depp this pale. In the earlier stages of his career, we witnessed a similar skin tone on this award winning actor as the star in “Scissor Hands”. I am curious to see how his ghastly look will come across on the big screen this time.

Must See Movie: The Help Explores Challenges and Victories During Civil Rights Era

If there is any movie that you need to see out of the plethora of summer films that have hit the big screen, it’s The Help. Although movies adapted from books are very common, this particular production is sure to evoke an array of emotions. Like most movies, it does differ from the book in some ways, but if you have read the book, you will be pleased to know that the changes do not detract from the story line, but rather enhance it.

Set in Mississippi against the backdrop of the tumultuous civil rights era of the 1960s, the plot centers the lives and dynamics between the black housekeepers/nannies and the white female employers. The movie focuses on three women: Eugenia (played by Emma Stone), the woman who decides to pen the controversial novel, Abileen, (played by the lovely Viola Davis), the wise and calm black housekeeper, and her friend, the feisty and witty Minnie, (Octavia Spencer) who has a terrible problem of “sass mouthing” her white employers.  The movie does a great job of capturing the tensions that were surrounding African Americans at this time as well as highlighting the close relationships that develop between the housekeepers and their employer’s children that they raise. It also highlights the theme of the relationships between mothers and their children.

Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan is a recent 23 year old college graduate who has recently returned home in pursuit of her dream career of being a journalist and discovers that the childhood maid whom she had grown close to has left abruptly. Skeeter doesn’t fit in among her peers because she is not actively pursuing marriage and wants to be known for her intellect. While working in her hometown, Jackson, Mississippi, she takes a job writing a domestic column about housekeeping (in which Abileen supplies the answers). She gets the idea to pen an anonymous nonfiction book based off the experiences of the housekeepers after applying for a job with a New York based publication. The publication’s Editor suggests that she submit something to possibly grab attention before even being considered.

In the beginning, apprehensive Abileen is the only one willing to assist Eugenia with Minnie joining shortly after. At first, many of the housekeepers don’t want to participate, fearing for their safety. But after seeing one of their peers being thrown in jail after a dramatic encounter with the antagonistic Hilly Holbrook, they all have a fierce change of heart and decide to share their stories. In the end, the book winds up stirring up controversy and being one of the catalysts to spark change as well as being a huge success.

Even though the movie is set in a different era, you are reminded that it was not too long ago. The movie interweaves footage from integral civil rights events with the plot lines of the characters to reinforce how dangerous it was for minorities, from Medgar Evans’ assassination, JFK’s assassination, and Dr. King’s March on Washington. It also reinforces the attitudes and some of the racial prejudices people had to experience at that time. From housekeepers being unjustly accused of stealing so they would get fired to the local, white citizen’s push for African American housekeepers to have their own bathrooms constructed outside of the white employer’s homes because of the belief that “they carry different diseases so we need to keep our children safe”, this movie does a great job of carefully exploring those issues without going overboard. If anything, it causes you to laugh at the antagonists and feel pity for them instead. It almost reminded me of the Denzel Washington movie, “Remember the Titans”, whereas the movie was not graphic and did not use a lot of profane language but still made you feel strongly for and even relate to some of the characters while remaining a family friendly movie.

One of the standout and many funny moments of the movie is when you find out what Minnie’s “Terrible Awful” is in reference to her famous chocolate pie but of course, you have to see that for yourself. Once you find out what she means, it is sure to solicit a laugh every time it’s referenced in the movie. Another great highlight is the surprise appearance of the legendary Cicely Tyson in the role of Constantine Bates and Sissy Spacek in the role of Hilly Holbrook’s mother.

The Help will make you laugh, shout, cry, and sometimes all at the same time but at the end, you will feel good. You will cheer and root for Minnie, Skeeter, and Abileen while shedding a few tears as well. While this may not be a movie for the smallest moviegoers (it may not be acceptable for children under 12 as it has some mild language in it) you can still take your family to see it as it is a bit reminiscent of the movies, “The Blind Side” and “Remember the Titans” as far as the sense of togetherness and making unlikely friends in the midst of turmoil. Run…don’t walk to see this movie.” You’ll be glad you did.

The Help is a Dreamworks Pictures film and hits theaters on August 10th.

Aspire Online Magazine and The HIGH UP.com had the opportunity to attend Press Day for The Help at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead. Here are some highlights:

Interviewer: Viola, how long did it take you to take on this role? Once you read the book, was it automatic…?

Viola Davis: “Oh, it struck me right away! You know, usually characters of color are relegated to a page or two. You know, I always say that when you’re invited to the coolest party in the world with the coolest people, you don’t think about people who were not invited. So, a lot of times people say, ‘Oh, you’ve been working so long, you have such an illustrious career, whatever.’ You know, usually, I get three or four scenes in a movie and that’s it at the most. At the MOST! I work at total of nine days, maybe. And that’s a lot. And people will say, ‘Yeah, but you were in that movie.’ I was a character in that movie, you know. I had a role. But this was a chance for me to actually really develop a character, to really be a part of it, you know? Then, major characters, characters who are really explored beyond taking care of babies and cooking in the kitchen. They’re lead roles for black women so it was a nobrainer.”

Interviewer: How did you prepare for the role?

Octavia Spencer: “My character drew on past experiences and from people in her life and family. In reference to paying homage to past men and women who worked in less than desirable positions that benefited others and why she had no trepidation in taking on the role, “I wanted to be truthful to them and to give them a voice.”

Octavia also stated she was currently writing and producing her own material and creating roles for women that would not be normally given roles, such as curvy women.

Horrible Bosses Gets an A+!

Happy Hour at Midtown Atlanta's Apres Diem

In a simple phrase… “HORRIBLE BOSSES is HILARIOUS” – and with only 5 months remaining in the year, I highly doubt ANY movie can challenge this one for Best Comedy honors. From the opening scene, the plot began to build, so there was not a single lull in action throughout the movie. It’s an incredibly successful mix of comedic devices and every character lives up to their role.

We all have had them – a boss that we thought was absolutely “the worst” person in the world and made us hate to go to work. In HORRIBLE BOSSES,

Movie guests at Apres Diem

three friends (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Sudeikis) all work for first class, Type A bosses (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey) that make their respective lives unbearable at work. When it begins to spill over into their personal lives, they “kinda” decide (over drinks) that it would be much better for them all if their bosses weren’t around anymore. They enlist the help of a “murder consultant” (Jamie Foxx) to help rid them of their problem and the plan quickly becomes an incredibly funny caper.

In each progression of the story line, the movie becomes funnier. Although each member of the cast performs their role well, Day steals the show with his awkward and bumbling character whose whole life has been a disaster. I’d venture to say the movie would only be funny (instead of hilarious) without him.

Horrible Bosses Pre-Screening

I highly recommend you see this movie; albeit, it more than earns it’s R rating. So, if you have sensitive ears you have a decision to make. It’s non-stop laughter mixed with random moments of shock and surprise to equal a perfect mix. On a scale of 1-5, HORRIBLE BOSSES definitely gets 5 toothbrushes from me… Go see the movie and you’ll know exactly what I mean. 🙂 See more photos from the pre-screening under event highlights at Aspire Online Magazine.

Jamie Foxx Stars In Horrible Bosses On July 8th!

For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust.  Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers…permanently.

There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them. Jason Bateman (“Couples Retreat”), Charlie Day (“Going the Distance”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Hall Pass”) star as the three hapless workers, with Jennifer Aniston (“He’s Just Not That Into You”), Colin Farrell (“Crazy Heart”) and two-time Oscar® winner Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty,” “The Usual Suspects”), as their unbearable bosses.  Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) stars as the plotters’ unlikely mentor, whose street cred is priced on a sliding scale.  The main cast also includes veteran actor Donald Sutherland and Julie Bowen (TV’s “Modern Family”).

“Horrible Bosses” is directed by Seth Gordon (“Four Christmases,” “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”) and produced by Brett Ratner and Jay Stern.  The screenplay is by Michael Markowitz and John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, story by Markowitz.  Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Michael Disco, Samuel J. Brown and Diana Pokorny serve as executive producers, with John Rickard as co-producer.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography David Hennings; production designer Shepherd Frankel, editor Peter Teschner and costume designer Carol Ramsey.  The music is composed by Christopher Lennertz.

“Horrible Bosses” opens nationwide on Friday, July 8, 2011.   A New Line Cinema presentation of a Rat Entertainment Production, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. This film is not yet rated.

Green Drinks, Celebs and Fun at the Green Lantern After Party Hosted @ Tin Pin Alley

After Party Guests

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! I have been all over the place trying to stay up on what’s happening in the “A”. Well, one thing I can tell you is that Atlanta is even hotter in the summer time. And I am not just talking about the temperature. 🙂 Anyone who has lived here for more than a day knows that there’s always something to do all throughout the week. My mission is to keep you informed of the great events, businesses and people living right here in the “A”. Now last week Aspire Online Magazine had the opportunity to cover the private VIP pre-screening of Green Lantern. Not only did I give the movie a rave review, I would have to say that the after party was just as spectacular. After the Green Lantern preview all the guests moseyed down to Tin Pin Alley in Atlantic Station for some fun, networking and drinks. If you have not had the opportunity to hang out at Tin Pin Alley, you should definitely go. It is a nice, upscale bowling alley that also has private lanes, so if you want to throw a private party, this is the perfect spot.

The after party had a nice mix of people from local celebs to nationally known celebs like Kwanza Hall (Atlanta City Council), D. Woods (former member of Danity Kane), Strings (formerly of Cash Money) and Rennie Curran (linebacker for the Tennessee Titans) just to name a few. See their exclusive interviews right here!

All the around the venue, people were mingling, chatting it up, and sipping on signature “glowing green” drinks.  DJ Green Lantern was the DJ for the night and he was laying down the law with

his sounds. Although, no one actually started break dancing on the floor, you had the occasional head bobbing when someone was feeling a song, including me. 🙂  It was a laid back atmosphere and not too crowed. I had a fantastic time networking and meeting new people. I love this life! Shouts out to Liquid Soul Media Group who put together such a great VIP pre-screening and after party (view more photos here)! You guys did your thing. Well ladies in gents, I want us to keep in touch so follow me on twitter at @tmonet and @aspireonline for the latest and the greatest! Oh, and don’t forget to leave a comment and subscribe to the blog!!

P.S. Look out for Aspire Online Magazine’s web show coming soon…stay tuned!!

Green Lantern Makes A Great Movie For the Entire Family!

Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds, was a test pilot, who lived his life fearlessly and self-absorbed. But when he became the chosen one to save the human race by killing the evil Parallax (who looked like a ginormous octopus and fed off of fear) his cocky, fearless ways were overtaken by his own insecurities. After he was chosen, he was taken to the planet Oa and given a brief history lesson on the Green Lantern Corps, peace-keepers of the universe, and the power the ring possessed.  One key thing Hal learned about the ring was that it was powered by the emerald energy of willpower, and was sent to every sector of the universe to choose a recruit, but was never sent to earth.  So, he was the first human to be a part of the corps.

AOM's T. Monet and Strings (Hip-Hop Artist)

While Hal, was on the planet Oa, he went through rigorous training to help rid him of his fear and strengthen his will. This was an important training session since the Green Lanterns were known for their lack of fear and iron clad willpower. After all the hardcore training, he still felt he could not bear the weight of being a failure if he could not defeat, Parallax, so he quit. But after his ex-lover Carol Ferris, played by the beautiful Blake Lively and his BFF, have an intervention with him, he rejoined the battle, but minus the fear and selfishness.  He jumped back into the fight, defeated Parallax, got the girl back, and saved the human race with his fearless nature that was within him the whole time.

My Final Thoughts:

Guests at the pre-screening

The Green Lantern movie was in 3D, which was awesome! All kinds of things were flying at me and I was jumping all over the place because of it. 🙂 I have been to many 3D movies, but these 3D images were almost in my lap, and it seemed so real.  The special effects were amazing and were meant to be over the top, because the story line was lifted right from a comic book.  If people are looking for something realistic, I don’t see why. It is a comic book, people. And if you are looking for a thought out storyline, it is a superhero movie!  They all follow the same formula; good vs. evil, and good always wins!  If you can get past looking for new twists and plots, you will enjoy the movie for what it is.

The sexy Ryan Reynolds was perfect for this part. He was the total jock that looked like he had everything, but as his character unraveled, you could see his weaknesses, and he was just like anybody else.  He did a good job in relaying this to the audience, as he took you along his journey from cockiness to humbleness. I also loved Blake’s role. She was not just a pretty face in the

T. Monet and Kwanzaa Hall (Atlanta City Council, District 2)

movie, and held her own on the big screen.  The two had great chemistry, and immediately you knew they had something brewing before and she was not quite over it.  The other actors in the film were Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins and Michael Clark Duncan (voiceover role).  One evil key player in the movie, Peter Sarsgaard, who played Hector, the genius professor, was infected by the another life form, and later used by Parallax to help play out his evil scheme.  He did a fabulous job of being creepy for the entire movie, even before he was infected.  I loved it. He was my favorite charter.

But what I loved most about this movie is the message.  The message was simple yet profound. You must learn to overcome your fears, and whatever you face in this life. You already possess everything inside of you to overcome it.

This movie is a great family movie, and would lend itself to great lessons and messages that parents can discus with their kids.  There is hardly any blood and no sex scenes in which makes the movie very kid friendly.  I give Green Lantern 4 stilettos out of 5!

Green Lantern Is Action Packed: Opens Today!

Guest at Green Lantern Pre-screening

The Green Lantern (2011 Warner Bros.) was pre-screened in Atlanta to an audience of celebrities, media and select general viewers. The turn out resulted in a packed house, complete with security, instructions to turn OFF your phones and roaming guards searching for violators. A leak was nearly impossible on this night…

Hal Hess (Ryan Reynolds) is chosen to join the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps after being chosen, by the essence of the ring itself, on the death bed of one of the Corps bravest warriors. After going through a series of trials, to include an impromptu training by fellow members of the Corps, he quits the ranks, just as he has everything in his life. That is, until the earth is threatened by a menace unlike any seen before in any galaxy – the evil Parallax, who is energized by fear. With urging by friends and a former lover, Green Lantern finds the will and strength to fight off and defeat this menace – and ultimately receives full acceptance into the Corps by his colleagues.

The film is relatively predictable throughout and has ebbs and flows for the first 2/3 of the movie.

After party "signature" drink

In the final 1/3, the action picks up, significantly, as the villain begins to take shape in the form of a brilliant scientist, Hector Hammond, (played by Peter Sarsgaard) who is infected by an evil life force during the autopsy of the Green Lantern’s predecessor. The action intensifies as Hammond is killed and the Green Lantern must engage the source of evil, which infected Hammond – Parallax himself. A galactic chase and battle ensue and the Green Lantern defeats Parallax through sheer will, determination and by recalling a lesson learned during his training.

The special effects were plentiful and incredible – we saw the Real 3D version of the film. However, many of the scenes were obviously shot via green screen and there was a clear delineation of actors from the background – so much that at times the background looked fully animated when compared to the actors. The film was riddled with these types of scenes unfortunately. Additionally, there were clear product placements by Chevrolet, Apple and LG. The placements were supposed to be subtle (general rule of thumb, anyway), but ended up being glaring promotions. The film included a number of relatively unknown actors, but also included veteran actors in key roles (Angela Bassett and Tim Robbins) and/or voice over roles (Michael Clarke Duncan). Blake Lively performed relatively well in the Leading Female role as the beautiful, multi-talented and highly sought after Carol Ferris. Additionally, Peter Sarsgaard provided several instances of comic relief in the role of Hector Hammond, the under-achieving, yet brilliant, scientist who rapidly began to go mad after being infected by Parallax.

Overall, on a scale from 1-5 (5 being awesome), I’d have to rate the film a 3. The plot is predictable, along with the outcome. Special effects are incredible (again, we saw the Real 3D version); however, several of the scenes looked VERY unrealistic due to how the scenes where shot and post produced. The movie started with action but then experienced a number of slow periods during the first 60-90 minutes, picking up in the final 30 minutes or so.
